Today is Friday, September 3, 2010 and we are announcing the winner of the “Chicago Design Challenge!” Thank you to everyone who submitted a plan, we received 28 entries and have short-listed 8 projects as the best of the best! 1. This is a plan by Jim Graham – we are very happy to have his hand drawn scheme posted today! He placed the kitchen in the middle of the space which provides great spatial separation between the living and dining areas. 2. This plan us from Jim Baer – Jim also placed his kitchen in the center of the plan. We really liked his dining area and its relationship to the study – it makes for a great private space at the top of the plan that will have a different feel from the living room below. 3. This plan is from Tara. Her kitchen is also in the middle of the plan – her living space is a great proportion and the see- through fireplace will provide a good visual connection between the study and dining areas. 4. This is Terri’s plan. Her kitchen is in the ideal location for this house. It is backed into a corner, has lots of counter space and storage and a direct link to the back entry. Well done! 5. This is a great hand drawn scheme from Rick B. Again, take note of the kitchen location and how it connects to the back entry. There is lots of storage and this is a clever use of a side yard condition. 6. This plan is from Murray – looks like the hurricane preparations did not stop him from submitting a plan! He has a great dining space, the proportion and location of the table is almost perfect. The back entry is roomy, but perhaps a bit too big given the scale of the house. 7. This is Nicole’s plan – it is elegant and efficient. Her mudroom space is the best of the group with ample storage and just the right amount of floor space. The pass through pantry is functional and clever. 8. And now, our winner! Congratulations to………you will have to watch the video to see who it is! All we can say is that it captured the Slow Home spirit in a way the is both simple and light. This project would be quick and easy to build, has all the attributes one would expect in a house of this size and effectively deals with circulation and storage. Well done! We are posting all the plans for everyone to see below! Again, thank you to everyone for taking the time to submit, we really appreciate it!
