Week In Review For Single Family Homes In Chicago

This is Day 227 of the Slow Home Project and we need you to join us in our quest to evaluate the design quality of houses in nine North American cities in nine months.

Today is Friday, September 3, 2010 and we are announcing the winner of the “Chicago Design Challenge!” Thank you to everyone who submitted a plan, we received 28 entries and have short-listed 8 projects as the best of the best!

To see the what the floor plan looked like before everyone renovated, click on the link below.

1. This is a plan by Jim Graham – we are very happy to have his hand drawn scheme posted today! He placed the kitchen in the middle of the space which provides great spatial separation between the living and dining areas.

2. This plan us from Jim Baer – Jim also placed his kitchen in the center of the plan. We really liked his dining area and its relationship to the study – it makes for a great private space at the top of the plan that will have a different feel from the living room below.

3. This plan is from Tara. Her kitchen is also in the middle of the plan – her living space is a great proportion and the see- through fireplace will provide a good visual connection between the study and dining areas.

4. This is Terri’s plan. Her kitchen is in the ideal location for this house. It is backed into a corner, has lots of counter space and storage and a direct link to the back entry. Well done!

5. This is a great hand drawn scheme from Rick B. Again, take note of the kitchen location and how it connects to the back entry. There is lots of storage and this is a clever use of a side yard condition.

6. This plan is from Murray – looks like the hurricane preparations did not stop him from submitting a plan! He has a great dining space, the proportion and location of the table is almost perfect. The back entry is roomy, but perhaps a bit too big given the scale of the house.

7. This is Nicole’s plan – it is elegant and efficient. Her mudroom space is the best of the group with ample storage and just the right amount of floor space. The pass through pantry is functional and clever.

8. And now, our winner! Congratulations to………you will have to watch the video to see who it is! All we can say is that it captured the Slow Home spirit in a way the is both simple and light. This project would be quick and easy to build, has all the attributes one would expect in a house of this size and effectively deals with circulation and storage. Well done!

We are posting all the plans for everyone to see below! Again, thank you to everyone for taking the time to submit, we really appreciate it!

Make sure to join us on Monday for a special “Bloopers” edition of Slow Home. John and Matthew are far from perfect, so make sure to watch this behind the scenes look at the past nine months!

Congratulations Tiffany and to all contributors, well done! As well congratulations John, Matthew and all advocates for completing such a monumental analysis of North American housing. Looking forward to the next steps.

  • BradW

Tiffany, congratulations on your design win! Well done.

I continue to tremendously enjoy the site and appreciate all the hard work and commitment shown by John, Matthew and Eric. As the Slow Home Project has now come to a close, I also wish to acknowledge the contributors who spent many hours finding, analyzing and posting homes on the site. Speaking from experience, it requires a great deal of time and energy and to those of you who have managed to consistently contribute in each city over the past 8 months I tip my hat to you!

I look forward to the next chapter in the Slow Home journey.

  • Murray

Congratulations John and Matthew on the completion of this monumental project and hearty congratulations to all those who worked so faithfully and contributed so much to its success. Yeah!

  • Andrew

Great designs, everyone! As usual it’s nice to see good hand-drawn floor plans. Tiffany, I think your plan has excellent proportions for all the principal spaces, good job. And Nicole, I really like your pantry strategy that divides the kitchen from the ‘back entry block’. Congratulations to everyone involved in the 2010 Slow Home Project – congratulations especially to John and Matthew!

  • Terri

Congratulations, Tiffany on your beautifully simple plan. Enjoy the book (what one is it, John & Matthew?).
It’s great to see so many good designs and the new contributors on the site too.

Congratulations, John and Matthew, for sustaining the Slow Home Project with such enthusiasm. (I hope you get to visit those winners eventually!) And as I said yesterday, I think the tireless contributors to the project deserve kudos. Great work, everyone!

I’m looking forward to the next evolution of the Slow Home.

i too applaud john and matthew and especially all that have contributed diligently and consistently throughout the slow home project. it was a task that was well beyond my store of time and energy.

  • Tara

Great job everyone! Awesome plans and good work!
It appears as if we have all benefitted greatly from the Slow Home site and John and Matthew’s teachings :).

  • Matthew North

Terri – thanks for the kind words – and yes, to your comment today and post yesterday, we are compiling the names of everyone who has contributed to this mass collaboration effort, either by reviewing a floor plan, posting a comment or submitting a design project so we can acknowledge, thank and celebrate their efforts. And…..I will posting the winning book prize for all to see shortly!

  • Matthew North

Paul C, Brad W, Murray, Andrew, Jim and Tara – thank you for being such loyal followers and being so active on the site – first time visitors are blown away by the sophistication of the commentary and the community feeling that is so evident! I hope you all take a moment to fill out the survey and really look forward to hearing what you think about the “blooper” episode on Monday!

Also, Molly K, if you are out there, we’ve all been thinking about you with the hurricane heading your way! I was happy to hear that a direct hit has been avoided.

Hello from Suburban Chicago! Thanks for all the wishes on Tuesday. Returned the moving truck 1.5 hours ago and talk about boxes! Turn there a box, turn the other way… another box. Feels wasteful. Recycle to Box furniture? Oh yeah that was Greg in the Brandy Bunch ;) My car is still not unpacked.

Sorry to see no single family nominees from my hometown :( Green in single family is far behind our green roofs and green buildings.

Great redesign project this week everyone.

    ***********
It has been a long 9 months! WE have done a great job… thousands of plans and probably just as many comments! Besides my break during Miami, when I was in Orlando (ironic)…. I think I have done a slow home test for every city. I do have a favorite , a place we had considered relocating to, Denver. Anyone care to share theirs?

I am looking forward to seeing our various winners and Monday’s bloopers next week. I am sure Matthew and John that the next initiative will be as fun and rewarding as this.

A slow home is a journey!

    Good job everyone!

  • Terri

    M.A.M.
Glad to hear you made it–sorry to hear about the work still ahead.;)

I agree with you–Denver stood out in my mind too. There seems to be a strong infill redevelopment initiative there with good modest design.

  • Steve in Van

WOW — what a great finale! Interesting plans, new participants, teasing our the final winner (woo-woo Tiffany!), and positive banter and laughter right through to the end. Well done, all!

As one who jumped on to this project at the beginning, fell off, and jumped back on at the end, I’m tremendously impressed by the dedication of the crew who hung on for the whole ride. The quality of the design work improved tremendously over the months — it’s easy to see why the final project had 8 really good designs to highlight … thanks to a positive learning enivonment and some really good teachers!

Lastly, I add my thanks to John and Matthew for creating both an engaging and educational online experience AND a caring community built around a shared commitment to a design ideal. When I’m able to participate, joining the Slow Home design exercise is a creative hightlight of my week. THANK YOU to all who make it possible.
