Shelving and Exterior Remodeling Examples

John and Matthew conclude the week by discussing viewer submitted examples of shelving solutions, as well as exterior renovations that maintain the integrity of the existing design.

    John and Matthew,
Thanks for sharing those inspiring millwork images (and thanks to Steve in Van for providing many of them).

The discussion of adapting a renovated home to its environment is also great! The home that Steve referenced, where the masonry was partially maintained in the renovation, was successful– I feel– because the granite is in blocks (isn’t it?) and of uniform grain, which marries well with modern. The North Kingsway rockwork is much more variable in colour and pattern, so it would be more difficult (or maybe crazy?) to marry it to clean, modern lines.

Terri, if the stone work could be restored it would not have been crazy to save it and add the very modern addition at the back along with the modern interiors – I think that is the point of the MOA house discussed above and a very often used strategy (not an always popular strategy but nonetheless there we are).

On a smaller scale, most Victorians in Toronto have been renovated to include modern open light filled spaces while retaining the existing facade.
