The Slow Home Project Wrap Up – Chicago

Today is Friday, September 10, 2010 and this is our final wrap up day on the Slow Home Project! We are looking at the results from our last city, Chicago.

Together, we analyzed 598 floor plans of three housing types in Chicago and 47% of them met the minimum design quality threshold of 13 out of 20 points on the Slow Home Test. This places Chicago ahead of Atlanta (36%) but behind Philadelphia (53%) and quite a bit back from Vancouver (79%).

Too see the data from Chicago in more detail, click on the graphs below.

We are also very happy to announce the winners of the Slow Home Awards as voted by you for Chicago!

The Slow Home Award for Best Apartment / Loft project goes to “Solstice on the Park“, Unit 1803 designed by Studio Gang Architects and developed by Antheus Capital.

The Slow Home Award for Best Townhouse Project goes to “500 Hyacinth Place“, Type C , developed by Highland Park Illinois Community Land Trust and designed by K2 Studio architects.

Congratulations to the winners! John and Matthew will be visiting the projects and presenting the awards in the near future.

I had high hopes for Chicago single family given its historic relationship to good architecture. Thanks again for these recaps looking forward to next week.

From a single family home perspective, I think there are many infill and renovation projects which would be considered slow. New builds in suburban green fields not so much. Slow Home, whether you agree or not, seriously stacks the deck against even well designed single family homes. I would be interested to see how the data would change if location were factored out of the analysis. Further, it would be interesting to see how things compared if only room by room data was used.

Since Slow Home is going live, how long do you think it will be before Matthew succumbs to a bout of uncontrollable laughter? I say within the first week…:)

Brad W – having me break out in laughter during a live broadcast is everyone’s greatest fear here at Slow Home. And by everyone, I mean John Brown.

Obviously, the last post was from me!
