Bravo, John and Matthew!  This is the best explanation I have ever seen on this subject.  So much great detail! Oh, and thank you so much for featuring  the Encaixe table lamp by Arturo Alvarez (3:50), available in the U.S. exclusively through Boutique Design Products.

    Hi everyone,
The plan has been opened up but kept very simple in design.
An interior window placed high in the wall enables light into the centre of the house.  This may not be the most elegant solution but solar tubes are not an option as this is a two story plan.
With this long narrow plan I believe it is important to take advantage of both the eastern  and the western exposures, waiting to see how someone else might handle this situation.

    Hi Frances GF, and others,
I’ve opted for a front kitchen, but without any actual appliance facing the street to minimize messy views. The person at a sink can look either left or right to the street or the eating area. The eating bar is raised from counter height for safety. I chose to install a double-sided gas fireplace as a focal point for both the living and dining rooms, with millwork surrounding it, and one side open above. Access to back would have to be through the opening by the chairs (if there actually is access…).

Oops! I’ve tried saving in larger format. Hope it’s visible this time. ;)
